Doing business in South Africa these days is tough. Amongst myriad other challenges, we’re confronted by convoluted regulatory red-tape, militant and politicised unions, massive skills shortages, a highly volatile currency, consistently low productivity and a government which for now seems determined to drag the economy down with irrational policies. To compound our troubles, global economic woes are placing further pressure on business to the extent that only the fittest can be expected to survive. That said, southern African companies are famously resilient and becoming suitably fit is often a simple function of commitment and effort and, sometimes, acknowledging the need to ask for help.
